#DailyRetroGame 92: Archon (1983)

People gushed over Battle Chess in 1988, but five years prior Archon gave you a proper arcade-y chess-like scrap. Pitting mythic creatures (light vs dark) against each other, you aimed to wipe out the opposition or secure five power points.

The twist: trying to take another piece transported you to a one-on-one battle screen, where you mostly got a kicking from the brutal computer player.
