A Mastodon client for the Apple 2

p.s. If you're into retro computing, highly recommend following the PeerTube channel @reenthused

It publishes lots of in-depth videos about retro computers and retro consoles from all around the world, including obscure ones. You can browse all the videos at https://diode.zone/a/reenthused/videos

I featured it today over on @FediVideo

@feditips there are also a couple of great Lemmy communities - https://lemmy.sdf.org/c/retrocomputing and https://lemmy.sdf.org/c/retronet

Discussions on vintage and retrocomputing

@feditips need to build a Windows 98 station just so I can post off it
@feditips
Some people use their spare time in the most wonderful ways…
@feditips @yonabee oh, have it run at simulated 300 baud next!!! That’s amazing.
@feditips omg can’t wait to boot this up on my //e
@feditips are there any for the #atari8it or #zxspectrum?

@rodlux

Not that I know of, sorry! 🙁

By the way, if you're interested in 8-bit retro computing you might want to follow @reenthused which I highlighted over on @FediVideo today. The account posts lots of 8-bit and 16-bit computing videos, you can browse them all at https://diode.zone/a/reenthused/videos

@feditips @reenthused @FediVideo thanks, will check out the links. It's been a while since I looked in detail at the retro scene.

In theory, it should be possible to build a client for the ZX Spectrum using some assistance from another server in the way that SpectraNet works.

But it would be a very difficult, probably not possible to fit a complete TCP/IP, DNS, and HTTPS stack in 40kb of RAM.

It makes sense to offload low level networking, DNS, authentication, and other non-core services to a proxy, and use the ZX Spectrum basically as a display terminal.

@rodlux @feditips

This is the SpectraNet I'm talking about.

Alternatively, it would have to be one of the ZX Spectrum Next / TBBlue-compatible newer Spectrums, with 2Mb RAM. Whether that's more "neospectrum" than ZX Spectrum, that's a highly subjective matter.

@rodlux @feditips

The SpectraNet device also comes with an external ROM that adds basic networking functionality, and a z88dk kit to write UDP and TCP sockets and http-based programs.

http://spectrum.alioth.net/doc/index.php/Spectranet_z88dk_libraries

But that's not in wide use, not part of the standard ZX Spectrum, and only a few hundred SpectraNets have been made/sold.

And you would still have to figure out what to do about SSL / TLS, and the rest of the ActivityPub higher level stuff.

Daunting.

@rodlux @feditips

So, it's not for lack of thinking that a Fedi/Masto/ActivityPub client for the ZX Spectrum still doesn't exist.

My hunch is that a new type of device should be designed specifically for the purpose of consuming modern JSON-based APIs over HTTPS on the #zxspectrum

Possibly one based on the Raspberry Pico or one of the affordable ESP32 + WiFi boards.

@haitchfive @feditips it should be possible when the core stack is offloaded. My #atari8bit is online :) As you say, Spectranet is not widely used but maybe provides some options.

@rodlux @feditips

The SpectraNet's stack is useful to connect easily to a LAN proxy via http, but maybe that function can be performed without a SpectraNet too, using basic serial networking. That approach has more chances of getting more widely deployed than requiring the more rare SpectraNet.

@feditips ooo I am going to look at the win95 app stuff, bet I can convert to my antibrowser stuff!
@feditips @griotspeak Ok now I want a //c more than ever before.

@feditips
Wow, quite a collection!

MVS was a gem in its time, and released open source (long before closed source wss invented). Nice to see the #mainframe represented.

And from memory TK5 (a turnkey MVS/Hercules emulator system) has BREXX included (or it's easy to add. I forget)

@feditips I need to try some of these.
@feditips Someone needs to make a client compatible with iOS 5

@feditips Any news on a client for early OSX? Between this, IRC still functioning and Nina/Escargot you could just about daily drive an older computer again... XD

Just need a Youtube client... :P

@feditips @motoridersd I’m waiting for Mastodon on Punch Cards
@feditips I’ll wait a bit longer for the Sinclair ZX81 version
@feditips command linux client?

@harald

There's a command line client called Toot:

https://toot.bezdomni.net/

It also works as a TUI client.

(By the way, it has no connection to the smartphone apps Toot! or Tooot, they're just similar names)

Introduction - toot

@harald @feditips
There is mastodon.el for Emacs of course.
@feditips MVS?? I didn't even think they used that name anymore. It's had Unix services for a few decades (I worked on them!).

@mrbruno

I'm just going with what it says on the app 😃

It is meant to be for retro computing people, so maybe MVS is appropriate?

@feditips I still think of it as MVS but I'm a dinosaur too.
@feditips I absolutely despise that windows 95 is considered retro.
