“I’ve been insulted because I was enormous when I was pregnant and now I’m being insulted for losing weight. I had sepsis after the birth”: Emily Atack’s outburst from The Rivals.
Thirty-year-old actress Emily Atack, known to the public for her roles in “The Rivals” and “The Inbetweeners,” revealed she had experienced serious health problems following the birth of her first son, Barney, who was born in 2024 from her relationship with her boyfriend Alistair Garner. In an interview released to the magazine Grazia, the actress explained that her recent weight loss was caused by a severe sepsis infection contracted after the birth, a condition that forced her to remain confined to the house for weeks.
Addressing the criticism received on social media, Atack denounced the contradictory attitude of users: “I’ve been insulted because I was huge when I was pregnant and now I’m being insulted for having lost weight.” The actress categorically rejected the speculation that circulated on Instagram, according to which she had resorted to injections to lose weight in order to show off a slimmer physique. Denying the use of drugs, she clarified the origin of her change: “My body retains all my trauma, as well as my happiness and joy. I had a very difficult pregnancy. I was very ill after the birth. I had sepsis, I couldn’t leave the house for weeks. It was terrible.” Adding a direct appeal to those who follow her, she stated: “I just ask people for a little patience and understanding for such a complex thing. Women’s bodies change continuously. I can’t take it anymore of having to justify myself.”
Atack recalled having always had a “healthy relationship” with her weight, but that she was completely unprepared for the comments she received when she landed her successful role as Charlotte Hinchcliffe in “The Inbetweeners.” “Everyone started talking about my weight,” she recounted. “There was an entire Facebook page dedicated to me and Charlotte Hinchcliffe. I couldn’t believe how terrible it was that people were talking about my weight.” The actress remembered how even fake compliments hid a distorted view of the body: “People then tried to be positive and said: ‘At least now we see girls with curvier figures playing more sexy roles on television.’ I didn’t even know I was curvy! I was a size 40 (the British size 8, ed.), a tiny body, but for some people it was the first time they were seeing a girl who wasn’t really, really thin. They were used to seeing actresses severely underweight playing the sexy girls.”
