The #ArcticBlast over #NorthAmerica is truly extreme. At the 850-hPa level, we are in the range of the 0.5% percentile of the climate mean, if you look at the GFS analysis. At the 2m #Temperature, the IFS forecasts a -6 to -10 degree deviation from 1% (!) percentile for today (12Z). These are anomalies we never see in Europe and which I have rarely seen for North America.

I love those animations of this incredible blast of arctic airmasses! Here is an animation of T2m fromt ICON model.
And the second animation shows Theta950 hPa. One can see how dry this arctic airmass is.
The first major cold snap of the season is overtaking the Lower 48 in the wake of a blizzard that dropped up to 2 feet of snow in North Dakota.
It's just the first shot.
Next week, the motherlode gets sent our way out of the polar region thanks in part to a massive ridge of high pressure building from the Pac NW up toward Alaska.
