The following are my five favorite books read through the first half of 2024. Each is unique in its own way and all tell amazing and interesting stories. As can be seen, I tend to prefer non-fiction.
My Goodreads.com reviews for each book are included below, though some contain spoilers.

Ghost Town Living (2024) – Brent UnderwoodMy review – “Beyond outstanding! An exemplary book filled with wisdom, heartache, pain, inspiration, and love. Love for this once abandoned ghost town that is slowly being resurrected into a home for its resident owner and caretaker, as well as for those who have a shared passion for preserving a slice of our collective history.”

My review – “This book is an absolute treasure to read. Not jus locally among San Franciscans and Californians, but to architecture and history aficionados worldwide. It is so nice to see this remarkable and oh-so handsome building get its due. Bravo Ferry Building and mucho kudos to the book’s author, John King.”

My review – “Quite a book! Interesting, informative, detailed, scary, heartbreaking inspiring, and full of fascinating tidbits. It would be interesting to read a more recent account and learn what new technologies (like smart phones, satellites, etc.) are being used, if any.”

My review – “A fascinating read, but also a bit frustrating. All this heroic buildup to be second guessed in the final pages. Those who made this miraculous covert effort successful deserve enormous praise for their efforts. Those who take potshots come across as jealous.
Regardless, my wish and hope is that the Malians find peace, that the manuscripts are carefully preserved for posterity, and Timbuktu is allowed to return to its rightful place among the great literary centers of the planet without the continued conflict that still befalls it today.
Timbuktu should be one of those iconic cultural, historical, and spiritual places that is protected by all for the betterment of all, much like Lhasa, Mecca, Nara, and Jerusalem.”
