Sneakers on a glacier at 4,000 meters: the shocking video sparks controversy. Experts: “A wrong equipment choice can turn into an emergency.”
The video filmed on the Breithorn glacier, between Italy and Switzerland, which shows some hikers tackling the ascent to the 4,000-meter peaks with equipment deemed inadequate for a high-mountain environment, quickly went viral on social media. Images published by Carlo Costa and also reposted by the portal Il Dolomiti sparked a heated online debate between astonishment, irony, and concern.
The footage shows people walking on the glacier with simple athletic shoes, light clothing, and without the technical equipment normally necessary for high-altitude routes. This scene represents a clear example of underestimating the risks associated with the alpine environment for many mountain enthusiasts. It’s not just the absence of crampons, boots, or suitable clothing that’s striking, but also the casual way the excursion was apparently undertaken. At almost 4,000 meters, conditions can change rapidly: ice, crevasses, wind, and temperature fluctuations make adequate preparation, as well as experience and caution, essential.
Many users on social media expressed strong concern: “The problem isn’t just reaching the top, but then being able to get back down safely,” “Go to the museums to see what equipment the pioneers of alpinism and climbing used. Go and see with what they did the first ascent of the north face of the Eiger… that’s how you’ll understand how important the equipment and physical and mental preparation are,” “They should put a bodyguard like a nightclub that only allows those with the right clothing to ride the lifts up… and leaves the others down %… if people couldn’t do it on their own!!!,” they write in various comments on the viral video.
The Experts’ Word
Experts emphasize that the mountains should not be improvised: a wrong equipment choice can turn a simple excursion into an emergency situation, putting at risk not only the hikers but also the rescue teams eventually called to intervene.
