Senegal slams 'illegal and deeply unjust' decision to strip Africa Cup title

Senegal isn’t giving up its Africa Cup of Nations title without a legal fight, with the country’s soccer federation saying it will appeal the “unfair, unprecedented, and unacceptable decision” to strip the team of its victory in a chaotic final against host Morocco. The Confederation of African Football on Tuesday ruled Senegal forfeited the final in January by walking off the field and turned its 1-0 win in extra time into a 3-0 default win for Morocco. The Senegalese Football Federation said it will appeal “as soon as possible” to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Women’s Africa Cup of Nations pushed back from March to the summer

The Confederation of African Football has rescheduled the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations to the summer less than two weeks before it was supposed to start. CAF says the tournament will now take place from July 25 to Aug. 16. The 16th tournament was supposed to be played in Morocco from March 17 to April 3 but reports persisted that Morocco wished to withdraw from hosting it for what will be the third straight time. The date change comes after CAF president Patrice Motsepe ruled it out on Feb. 13 because the tournament also doubles as a qualifying event for the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil.

Organizers say 2027 Africa Cup will take place as planned in Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya

The president of the Confederation of African Football says the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations will go ahead as originally planned in Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya. Patrice Motsepe says the tournament will be played in June and/or July and that the organization will be announcing exact dates soon. Motsepe also addressed Morocco’s hosting of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations next month, saying it will go ahead as planned from March 17 to April 3. There had been reports that Morocco wanted to withdraw from hosting the tournament for the third time straight after South Africa offered to take over.
