Update for the 3-4 of you that care! 🤣 After much consternation, I’ve packed my bags for 2 weeks in #Scotland. The #PeakDesign bag is a little heavier than I prefer, but with the capture clip it will be the most functional by far, as it will allow me to be hands-free to hold maps, get water, etc. There’s a handful of things in it (as opposed to in the other bag) because I want them easily accessible on the plane…once we get to a hotel I can lighten it considerably by shifting them, which will also leave more room for fulfilling the role of a normal traveling day pack.

Ended up deciding on this combo:
- #NikonZ5ii, 28-120 f/4
- #YashicaMAT124, med yellow filter
- 15 rolls #KodakTriX
- 1 roll #IlfordDelta3200, primarily as more of an excuse to ask for hand checks.

I predict I will either run out of film or come back with just over half exposed. I was very tempted to go all in with film taking a combination of 35mm and 120, but then I was at the mercy of CT scanners, and wouldn’t have the flexibility of the Z5ii’s low light capabilities. So I plan on taking film shots of the things that are the most striking, and using digital for backups of those as well as general travel type snapshots.

The #REI ruckpack has been my travel bag of choice for the last several international trips we’ve been on. The hip belt is substantial (more in line with a “backpacking” backpack) and there is a zippered flap that covers it as well as the shoulder straps so that when you’re dealing with something like an overhead compartment you don’t have all these straps dangling about. We’ve gotten good at “travel laundry” so there’s usually a decent bit of space left over for purchases while abroad - for instance I’m confident I could easily fit two 750mL bottles of Islay Whisky, assuming Edinburgh has a duty-free shop… 🤔

If anyone has traveled with any of the above and has any last minute tips or suggestions, please let me know!

Well one came out pretty well, two were decent, and the rest were some level of fogged...here are 4 of the 6 usable images from worst to best. I also used the negadoctor module in DT for these.

Sunset Peak hike from Alta ski area, Utah. Photos taken with a Yashica camera on Kodak Portra 160. I'm bummed by the vertical stripes on some of these shots. Anyone have an idea what might be causing it?

On the way home I pulled over to take a few shots of a nearby construction site and an old water tower, which I’ve been wanting to do for a while…and I had one roll left in my bag.

Some photos from my jaunt around Uptown #CharlotteNC this past weekend. (For some reason Charlotte calls their downtown Uptown, I don’t know why. I lived there for almost a decade before moving to the ‘burbs in 2020, sometimes I miss it, most times I don’t.)

Spent a few hours in town with the #YashicaMAT124 today. Decided to rely solely on the built-in meter which makes dialing in settings for the exposure mostly a snap. Negative density looks pretty good, I think. #TriX400 with #Rodinal - hope to have time to scan tomorrow. I wish I knew how much of the frame is metered - I tried to meter for the shadows and recompose on shots with a lot of range.

I blame @tomnorthfilm for this 😜

After reading his article I went out on a limb. I’ve been wanting another #TLR for a while now (I love the #C330 but it’s *huuuge*) and didn’t want to spend #Rolleiflex dough…not yet at least.

So I ended up also getting a #YashicaMAT124

Now to find scans of an old manual…

@kaiser_photo The negs look good. I’ve found the meter on my 124G does a pretty good job.
@tomnorthfilm I used it for a few pictures on that first roll I put through it a while back and they came out decent, so it seemed worth the risk. I was a bit nervous pulling the first roll out of the tank!
@kaiser_photo My backup meter is either the 35mm camera I often have with me or the My Light Meter Pro app on my iPhone. If I’m questioning the 124G reading I can always take another reading. On my most recent roll in the 124G, however, I relied completely on the in camera meter. It didn’t let me down. This from the “As-Is” camera with a supposedly non working meter.
@tomnorthfilm I will be curious to see what happens as the battery ages/drains, eventually I will want to get one of those little voltage regulator adapters.
@kaiser_photo I use an MR-9 adapter in mine fitted with a 386 silver oxide battery. I avoid alkaline batteries in cameras. The reason the seller thought the meter was broken on mine was a leaky alkaline battery. Once I got the battery out and cleaned up the battery chamber it worked fine.
@kaiser_photo These are the MR-9 adapters I use. https://www.ebay.com/itm/256835472473

Japanese-made Kanto adapter uses common SR43 battery to fit into a camera that uses the 625 battery size, and reduces the voltage to the recommended 1.35V.

@tomnorthfilm thanks! I’ve added this to my watchlist to scoop up later
