The #WinterWar, i.e., the #Soviet invasion of #Finland, ended on #ThisDayInHistory in 1940 with the signing of the #MoscowPeaceTreaty. This cost Finland half of #WestKarelia (#EastKarelia was already in Russia). It was in #Karelia that most folk tales in the #Kalevala were found.

World War II section of the old cemetery. I guess the mannequins were a special thing for the independence centennial?

Finland only gained independence from its neighbour in 1917 and which last fought off invaders from the east in the #WinterWar of 1939-40!
On #ThisDayInHistory in 1939, the #WinterWar began. A massive invasion of #Finland by the #SovietUnion, it was launched by Stalin to regain lands lost during the #RussianRevolution. It forced Finland to cede 12% of its territory and unfortunately to ally for a time with Nazis.
