5. A week later and the Mr, the Youngest and myself go back to the #RSPCA. He's brought into the room wearing a cone as he's been castrated. We learn that he's been an 'indoor' dog: never been out walking, never been in a car, not house-trained, never eaten dog food but scavenged human food scraps. Crikey, he looks like he's never eaten at all, his skin is translucent and his body sharp and knobbly, every bone visible.
He is "10, or he might be 11, we're not really sure" years old and has a grade 4 heart murmur.
He is anxious, aloof and in desperate need.
We have what he needs and arrange a meeting for him and Hector, you know, just to see if they get on together...
His name is Jed and he is the saddest, most elderly, poorly animal in the shelter and his name is already written across our hearts.

4. Fast forward a number of years and on 13/04/19 I went to find out about volunteering at my local #RSPCA - dog walking, general animal cares, whatever I could do. Whilst there myself and the Youngest had a quick look round... There he was.
He was standing there shivering, his bony body coiled so tightly the tip of his tail was touching his chest. His ears were drawn backwards close to his head and his eyes, huge and liquid, darting anxiously between us and the wall of the bare, cold pen he was in. Both the Youngest and I lost our hearts.
That night I told Mr about this pathetic, tiny scrap of a whippet, so insignificant that, although he'd been there over a week, he didn't even have an information sheet attached to his kennel.
We both looked at Hector, our near-perfect example of how a #whippet should be and made arrangements to go back to the RSPCA, you know, just to find out a bit more about the dog.

1. 03/09/09 'Delightful Doc' Hector was born, one of seven siblings. Eight weeks later he came to live with us. I was at home with a 1yo, a 4yo, a 10yo and this tiny four-legged whirl-wind.
Being a total, complete cat lady, I finally bonded with this monster seven years later.
My baby boy turns 3 tomorrow!!! Where did the time go? 😭 Happy birthday to the greatest friend in the world! ❤️
A whippet’s life - but we all need our head cradled once in a while, don’t we? Meg loves it.
