Another example of good, relevant reporting by AP https://apnews.com/article/southern-california-debris-flow-rain-wildfire-663334ac70b701eb8e761da5269dd02d

Sounds like the heavy rains (up to 100mm) over the hilly burnt areas in #LAfires did cause the expected mud slides but mud only went up 20cm in the roads - while remaining buildings were protected by sand bags and temporary concrete walls.

With the top soil now washed away, will new plants be able to take root at all? 🤔 I guess so. Because this mediterranean biome, called Chaparal biome, consists of shallow root grasses, shrubs and low trees. Not like in the Rockies in the article above.
And could the precious mud in the roads now be hauled back uphill ?🤔 I guess not. Because it also contains the toxins from all the burnt buildings, I reckon.

After heavy rains, debris flows hit Southern California community scarred by fire

Residents of a Southern California mountain community near the Eaton Fire burn scar are digging out of roads submerged in sludge after the strongest storm of the year swept through the area, unleashing debris flows. Dry weather returned to the region but the risk of rock and mudslides on wildfire-scarred hillsides continued Friday since dangerous slides can strike even after rain stops. Water, debris and boulders rushed down the mountain in the city of Sierra Madre Thursday night, trapping at least one car in the mud and damaging several home garages with mud and debris.

@stekopf
I get your direction. But I see that the article lists extremes of the kind "that once in a while occurred since dawn of time. To say this or that event were climate-change related is alarmism", probable FOX "analysis".

I know, civilisation breaks from the impacts of clusterfcks of such extremes on societies. But there are also subtle changes that also affect harvests but they're not (FOX) news-worthy extremes. I happen to be interested in making those visible. After all: there is life beyond #weatherextreme and that life changes, as well, The changes need to be known and dealt with. Esp. useful to spread such knowledge before the collapse occurs. So survivors know and can adapt easier. And who knows, even some Easterlings in Germany might get an epiphany.

Thanks for the Wiki link! A German saying would be "Wenn Dein Pferd tot ist, steig ab." Once your horse is dead, dismount.

So in the past 10 years, an additional one percent of Republicans dismounted from their dead horse despite being in FOX' target group. 1% seems like "natural variability", maybe pandemic related: many old Reps naturally died because they denied vaccines and masks. Also naturally, fewer younger Reps died, despite not wearing masks, yet these also tend to be more concerned wrt climate. Hence a minuscule overall increase of live-horse riders.

TEMA Project & Extreme Weather Events: a parallel between Ahrtal & Emilia Romagna

The recent flood in Emilia Romagna showed that the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events are increasing, and we need to prepare more. In the Horizon EU framework, there is the TEMA project, where the partner organisations are developing a platform that will help predict natural disaster
