Imagine making a pair of headphones that are SO FRAGILE that there's an entire class of memes about them.
Sony's WH1000-XM5 headphones are so well known for earcup hinge failure that there's not only a meme on the SonyHeadphones subreddit about it, but a broader lore about a dog that appears in that meme has developed as well.
And now they're asking $450 for the new WH1000-XM6 headphones? Fuck that. Don't buy that shit. If you do buy that shit, pay for a protection plan on them, or make sure you register your purchase with your credit card's benefit services so you can take advantage of the warranty extension, if your card has one.
Personally, I bought a pair of them in 2022, the hinge failed 16 months after that. Thankfully they replaced them for me for free at the time, but now the replacement ones have a slightly different form of hinge failure developing, and a ziptie is holding it together for now, and they refuse to do anything about it because it's "physical damage or cosmetic damage", which is plainly bullshit but since it's already a replaced pair I'm out of luck.
huh, that's a new one. if my WH1000-XM5 headphones are paired to my phone and my laptop, but only connected to my laptop, if my phone's screen turns on (even without unlocking) and my phone's bluetooth is enabled (but, again, not connected to the headphones), within 12 seconds it will kill the connection between the headphones and my laptop
only relevant thing I can see in the sea of grapheneos's system logs is "BluetoothRemoteDevices: Update property, device=XX:XX:XX:XX:7F:DC, type: 3" but unsure if that means anything
super fucking annoying, this means if I even pick up my phone (which causes the screen to come on and some bluetooth shit to run), it'll kill the headphones' connection to another device when it's not even connected to the headphones in the first place.
same shit happens with headphones connected to steam deck - phone will cause them to disconnect merely because it's paired
A few-months-in update to my #Sony #WH1000XM5 headphones, and: for my use cases, I dearly wish I'd bought something else.
Pros: Incredible sound quality (both out and in, I've had people pause in meetings to compliment how good my voice sounds), great battery life, unbelievable comfort (I could wear these for 8 hours a day), can connect to and seamlessly switch between two devices (crucial, my work day is a mix of music on my phone and work meetings).
But the cons. Oh, the cons. 🧵
