Put on our big pants (and 1000v gloves) and took the old battery packs out today. Once we started not hard at all and not very scary (350v DC will kill). Now prepping the case lip for resealing. Next session will be putting the new battery packs in. Super fun 🀩 #Vivnes #NissanLeaf #Recycle #DIY

Off Grid Energy Storage Using Recycled Electric Car Batteries

We would really like to one day run our backup servers, and maybe even some of our principle services from our location in #Wānaka, #Otago.

In order to make this feasible we will need a reasonable amount of off grid storage to ensure we can keep everything up in a power cut.

Gwilym’s 2016 Nissan Leaf blew a cell (or at least looking at #LeafSpy that appears to be what happened) a few months ago. This has lead to a roller coaster ride of What Ifs and Why Nots.

@Niall what a wonderful project!

I’ve ordered a battery kit from a company called #Vivnes (our #ev Leaf is to be my daughter’s first car) and a kit to make the old cells into a house battery unit. At the same time we’re specifying solar for the house so important everything works together.

Question 1: If our solar is grid tied does a house battery need to be certified, are there barriers to what we have on our home mini grid?
