Although I've never played Doki Doki Literature Club, I have listened to its OST. So, for #vgmwednesday I shall share the main theme for the visual novel. From listening to this theme alone, you'd be forgiven for thinking that DDLC is going to be a standard dating sim. The song is cheery, upbeat, and if you listen to it for long enough, it can become a bit of an earworm.

In actuality, at least, from what I've heard, this visual novel is one of the most horrifying examples of a genre deconstruction, completely subverting the expectations of anyone coming in blind.

For #VGMWednesday, have some Silence.

By which I mean, Silence from F-Zero on the SNES, which has one of the most killer bass lines of all SNES soundtracks.

Ending that implies the music in this video dear #VGMWednesday followers.

The curtain goes down to end what should have been a trifle. Actually that sounds delicious.

I don't begrudge Theophany leaving the Time's End project unfinished to work on composing new music for Kena: Bridge of Spirits (which has a sequel on the way), but I do wonder what else might have been done with the ideas for those #MajorasMask albums. One trick used on "Lovers Mask" in particular was layering the strings over repeated piano notes to sound like time was being reversed, as the player would need to do so many times to unravel the knot that's the Anju & Kafei sidequest which rewards the Couple's Mask.

If 14 years ago, you told me there was going to be #3DS game where Ryu from Street Fighter, Blackrose from .Hack, Chris Redfield from Resident Evil, Frank West from Dead Rising and 50 other characters from a myriad of games would fight together in a strategy RPG action game...

Well, I would have thought that was patently insane. Which, quite frankly, that is what Project X Zone is. Conceptually wild and oozing with fan service and I really should revisit it one day. Even more so for the original game in the series Namco x Capcom.

Anyway, Project X Zone, would it be too much to also add that it has quite the banger of a Japanese opening song? Maybe it is just me, I am a sucker for a vocal opening song to a game, especially when it comes with some great animation.

Was this a poorly elaborate way to drop something for #VGMWednesday , I mean, yes, but does it matter? Really?

For #VGMWednesday I'm thinking back to the early 2000s drum and bass-y vibes of Super Monkey Ball. This was the first game I got for my GameCube, and as far as replay value goes a pretty good one considering how tough some of the later levels are.

Since the Music of Square Enix concert in Chicago was just held on Mother's Day, and there were two songs from the Mana series by Hiroki Kikuta played there, this week I'm sharing one from Trials of Mana. Here's Jeffery Hayat's arrangement of "Female Turbulence" for #OCReMix album of Seiken Densetsu 3's soundtrack (Songs of Darkness and Light released before Collection of Mana gave the game an English title). The song is used for Altena, the Kingdom of Magic, where you start with Angela before her mother the queen takes their poor relationship and makes it worse. I would still advise people to start the game with Kevin for their first time, but Angela's opening does make a more serious impression and the music gives you a taste of what's to come.

For #VGMWednesday I'm thinking about the cool, smooth, electronic tone of the menu music from Mirror's Edge.

I absolutely loved this game, the look, the feel, the sounds. I remember playing it before I had a graphics card, and then when I upgraded and saw the PhysX flags and tarps everywhere I thought, "That's it, video games will never look better than this."

NEOTOKYOΒ° is a video game I will likely never play. It's a multiplayer Half-Life 2 total conversion mod with a cyberpunk aesthetic that borrows liberally from Ghost in the Shell. Honestly, it looks pretty neat.

But that's not important. What's important is that the soundtrack is an absolutely fantastic blend of electronica and orchestral bits, and you should definitely listen to it. So, for #VGMWednesday, I put forth "Scrap I/O" from Neotokyo GSDF.
