@paul @futurebird personally, I wished #VehicleTax would go by #deadweight and #dimensions and incentivize #smol and efficient #PersonalLightVehicles over #SuperUselessVehicles

@unseenjapan propably because like the #Netherlands, #Japan has a spechal #VehicleTax Scheme re: #Taxis which instead get taxed by revenue, not flat fee.

  • Which makes sense given strict #licensing and the fact that said vehicles in return are not legal to use privately.

Whilst Japan isn't known for much violent crime, I'd not use any illegal #Taxi simply because mugging is a risk factor and if something happens, insurance of the driver may not cover it with the added risk of getting charged for soliciting illegal taxi services if the police catches one as passenger...

  • In other worlds: It's not worth it!

@breadandcircuses @DrTCombs or at least regulated out of existance with #VehicleTax based iff #Engine displacement * emissions and the fact that.most drivers can't legally drive them as their MGW exceeds their license...

In fact, it's illegal to even park them on,the curb if they exceed 2,8t MGW...

@[email protected] how are these things even road legal? I'm glad the #SuperUselessVehicle wave in #Europe isn't that extreme as regular car driving licenses max out at 3,5t MGW. Also note these solely exist so that greedy manufacturers can charge more for a worse car that also doesn't comply with the #EPA's #CAFE emissions standards... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jN7mSXMruEo

@threetails @dragonarchitect precisely!

Also #fuel in the #USA is way too #cheap compared to the #EU & #Japan, where the same price in €¢ & ¥ is being paid per liter (!!) as in $¢ per gallon (!!!) in the USA.

I mean, if filling up a #SuperUselessVehicle is still not in the triple digits then there's no need to demand #FuelEfficiency.

Furthermore, #VehicleTax in the USA isn't based on #Displacement multiplied by #Emissions as in #Germany.

Vehicle Tax for my small 1.4 Ford Fiesta, is now £200/year. I understand the government wants people to use more environmentally friendly cars but when the whole reason you haven't bought a newer car is because you can't afford one, it really hurts.

The government too often forgets that tax rises don't affect those with higher income because they can already afford to offset that cost by buying a newer vehicle. Those on lower incomes however get priced out.

To put it into perspective, my friend who has a 2L BMW pays less vehicle tax than I do!
