Howard G. Smith MD, AM on Instagram: "Healthy Plant-based Eating Reduces Health Disease Risk
Those consistently eating healthy plant-based foods were half as likely to fall victim to cardiac disease as those on a typical western diet. Johns Hopkins epidemiologists reviewed data from 7,708 respondents, mean age 45 years, replying to the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The participants were divided into 4 groups according to their reported consumption of health plant-based foods, and their susceptibility to cardiac disease was quantified by measurement of their circulating cardiac troponins and n-termination natiuretic peptides.
The results showed that the risk having of elevated circulating cardiac biomarkers, a sign of cardiac disease, was 49%% lower for those eating the most healthy plant-based diets compared with those consuming the least. The healthiest plant-based foods included fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans, and olive or canola oils.
On the other hand, those eating the worst diets containing red meat, fried foods, and palm oils bore a 65% higher risk of heart issues. Somewhere in-between are the plant-based meats sold under the Beyond and Impossible brands. These offerings, while lacking meat proteins, are highly processed containing excess salt and saturated fats due to the addition of coconut or palm oils to improve texture.
The bottom line: stick with natural sources of plant-based proteins and you’ll likely live longer.

Howard G. Smith MD, AM on Instagram: "The Tobacco Smoking Cessation Drug Chantix Helps Your Teen Stop Vaping
Adolescent vapers taking the drug varenicline, branded as Chantix, were 8 times more likely to abandon the practice compared with those receiving behavioral counseling and a quit-vaping text program. This the finding from a study by Harvard’s Mass General Hospital psychiatrists studying addiction in young adults.
Their trial included 261 adolescents 16 to 25 receiving either the test drug, a placebo drug, or conventional counseling over a 3 month period. When the data were tabulated, 51% of those on varenicline had completely stopped vaping, compared with 14% in the placebo group, and about 6% receiving counseling. The effect was lasting with more than half of the Chantix group remaining vape-free 6 months after stopping therapy.
With 1.6 million American middle and high school kids vaping in 2024 according to the CDC, an effective medication to help drive vaping cessation is more than welcome. Chantix is a prescription drug, so parents do speak with your child’s pediatric team about obtaining it if your child has an e-cigarette habit to kick.

#SmokingCessation in Adults:
https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamainternalmedicine/fullarticle/2820176 https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamainternalmedicine/article-abstract/2820176?utm_source=substack&utm_medium=email “e-cigarettes were as effective as varenicline pills in helping heavy smokers quit over a 6 month period. Both e-cigarettes and varenicline were vastly superior to placebo. Over 40% of volunteers randomized to use e-cigarettes or varenicline had quit smoking regular cigarettes by the 6-month follow up time, compared to under 20% who were given placebos”

Electronic Cigarettes vs Varenicline for Smoking Cessation in Adults
This randomized clinical trial examines the relative effectiveness of electronic cigarettes in smoking cessation.
A randomized trial in
#smokers with major depressive disorder found that
#varenicline improved smoking
#abstinence versus placebo at 27 weeks without elevating rates of adverse events. Behavioral activation for smoking cessation did not outperform standard behavioral treatment, with or without adjunctive varenicline therapy.
