Objectively, I think Victoria's donations system is unfair.

The rules allowed the old parties to 'grandfather' their wealth and prevented new parties and independents from establishing competitive campaign funds.

That's not to suggest that allowing a free-for-all is the solution.

Former MP mulls legal action over Victoria’s political donations cap

Former MP Roger Pescott argues Labor’s election reforms contravene the Victorian human rights charter’s guarantee of freedom of expression, and breach the right to freedom of political communication.

Victorian Upper House results give left of centre parties 22 of 40 seats, one more than previously. Two of those seats went to Legalise Cannabis. It'll be interesting to see if any deals on that issue are needed to ensure passage of other legislation.
