"Free public transport in Victoria appears to have had some effect in shifting demand away from cars, but the difference compared to NSW – where fares remained unchanged – is modest rather than dramatic....the relatively small difference between Victoria, where public transport was free, and NSW – where fares remained unchanged – suggests price is not the main constraint on mode shift. Access, travel time, service reliability and the ability to make specific trips appear to matter more."

Victoria has made public transport free – NSW hasn’t. Has there been any difference in uptake?

Public transport access, travel time and familiarity with the network all play a role in how many people switch away from driving.

🚏 Free public transport has been implemented in a few places around the world, but it is not a common policy.

Luxembourg and Malta have it. They are both very small countries. Hasselt (Belgium) and Tallinn (Estonia) are some other examples.

In Australia, the Northern Territory has it but that is essentially limited to Darwin and Alice Springs. Queensland has a 50 cent fare. Victoria and Tasmania have just announced free public transport in response to potential fuel shortages caused by conflict in the Middle East. In Victoria it's just for one month. In Tasmania it's for three months.

It is a good measure for short term cost of living relief and also for reducing demand for liquid fuel when there are potential supply problems. However, I don't think it is practical in the long term. It is more important to improve public transport services and keep fares at an affordable price.

Because fuel is one of the smaller costs of driving fuel probably needs to be $4/L before it makes sense for people to switch to PT based on fuel costs alone.

This will be a good test case to see how much of how little free public transport in Melbourne will increase ridership.

PT was already cheaper than driving with fuel at $1.70 if you're traveling more than 14km in a day (based on the ATO's $0.88 estimate of the per km cost of driving)

So I'm sure there will be few people that could take PT, that aren't currently, and would make the switch if it was free.

EDIT: changed the distance from 7km to 14km in a day. Forgot to change it when I changed the sentence from 'commute' to 'in a day'.

It's interesting to see Kennet suggest VIC Libs preference One Nation.

There's 7 electorates in inner-suburban seats that are on margins of less than 5%.

To say this is a bad idea after the weekend's SA election results is an understatement.

Last election was the "Danslide 2.0". Is this going to be a "Jacintaslide", despite all the naysayers?

18%? What is this? A pay rise for ants?

Victorian teachers want a 35% pay rise to bring them up to what teachers are paid in other states.

Its disgusting that the government takes advantage of how much teachers care about teaching the next generation.

What do we think about putting the premier on a teachers wage?
