Józef Ulma led his family courageously. A devoted father, hardworking and inventive, a mind bursting with ideas.
His home was the first to boast electricity in the village.
Socially active, he was attentive to the affairs of the local community.
His ultimate sacrifice was risking and giving his life for sheltering Jews.

During World War II, the Nazis murdered anyone who hid Jews, and their family. The Ulma family took the risk, and payed the highest price for it.

Their example and courage resonates deeply within the hearts of the Poles, and is an example for the world.

Vatican holds unprecedented beatification of Polish family of 9 killed for hiding Jews

In an unprecedented move, the Vatican has beatified a Polish family of nine — parents and their small children — who were all executed for having sheltered Jews during World War II. Last year Pope Francis declared the Ulma family, including the child that Wiktoria Ulma was pregnant with, martyrs for the Catholic faith, and paved the way for the beatification Mass taking place Sunday in the village of Markowa. The Ulmas were killed there in 1944, together with the eight Jews they were hiding at home. The Catholic Church faced a dilemma because the unborn child had not been baptized. The Vatican’s saint-making office issued a clarification last week saying the child received “baptism by blood” and can be beatified.

A little dust up on FB between Trebor Scholz, Rory Ridley-Duff, and Dario Azzellini, among others about the significance of the departure of two big, multinational industrial cooperative groups, #Ulma and #Orona, from the #Mondragon Corporation. It is disappointing to see scholars jump to the defense of Mondragon Corporation and its officers instead of eagerly exploring the critical questions these departures raise and how they affect workers.
