Bigfoot is not that unlikely, compared to other cryptids, because it’s proposed as another species of giant ape. But that idea introduces two very unlikely and unsupported options:- A. Another member of the human lineage survived undetected alongside us in an area where humans are populous. Or,
- B. Another family of great apes evolved, independently of humans, to walk bipedally.
Sasquatch as a concept is not very old, considering that indigenous mythology didn’t consider it on the same status as a bear, deer or other local animal. It was more of a spiritual being. Where is the evidence for it in prehistoric America?The descriptions of the creature are variable, so much so that several researchers propose that there are multiple unknown species across the continent. This is really stretching the limits of plausibility. Large animals don’t evolve into such distinct populations as proposed in such a short period of time. Stories of Bigfoot include significant human interactions. Yet they remain “undetected”. This does not square with how the real world works. How is it that we regularly encounter the creature but yet can’t establish its existence?Bigfoot is widespread in range, reported from across the continent, not just the Pacific Northwest. It strains credulity to say that it can be so widely distributed but never be found or documented properly. The idea of no body parts of dead animals may apply to remote (there is no untouched wilderness) parts of forestland, but Bigfoot is reported close to towns and, since they are seen by people, in areas inhabited by people. Therefore, we should have found better evidence by now. How would have a Bigfoot species gotten to America? If it was a species from Asia (say, Gigantopithecus – which is problematic in itself), it would have crossed over the Bering land bridge (connecting modern Siberia and North America 15,000 years ago at the latest). Yet, we do not find fossil evidence of it as we do for many other large Ice Age species. There are many other assumptions made that don’t stand up to scrutiny and that scuttle this idea of an Asian migration. In conclusion, there are several lines of evidence missing for Bigfoot that should exist for us to find, if it is a real animal. Doubt about its reality is well-justified, not just skeptics being dismissive. The fact that scientific research has failed to support the idea of Bigfoot as a species leaves a huge problem with the widespread reports of its existence across the US and Canada. If it’s not a zoological possibility, then what is going on? We have two general options here:
The sightings and reports are a socio-cultural phenomenon where people are interpreting their encounters as a Bigfoot experience, but they are not actually seeing a Bigfoot as we culturally know it. Instead, the sighting (hearing, smelling…) could be an established animal, person, or thing that the witness did not correctly identify. This option also includes misremembered accounts, deliberately exaggerated or fictionalized reports, and outright hoaxes. If people are told that Bigfoot exists, they are more likely to report that they have encountered it. Bigfoot/Sasquatch is not a zoological creature. Since it has been able to avoid capture and biological identification, its behavior and capabilities go beyond natural. It must be para-natural. This option creates an entirely new, complicated, implausible, and currently unsupported array of concepts to unpack.
