Switching 50km/h speed limits to 30km/h would protect cyclists while barely affecting commutes, research finds

It has long been argued that lowering the speed limits to 20 MPH (roughly 32 km/h) dramatically increases the collision victim's chance of survival. In Seattle, all the neighbourhood streets now have a speed limit of 20 MPH, but IMO it should be even lower—e.g. 15 MPH, or for narrow streets, even 10 MPH.

Switching 50km/h speed limits to 30km/h would protect cyclists while barely affecting commutes, research finds

One expert says a cyclist hit by a car travelling 50km/h has about a one-in-10 chance of surviving, while at 30km/h it is a nine-in-10 chance

States rethink an old rule that allows drivers to determine the speed limit

Road safety activists and some states are pushing to depart from a longstanding rule that sets speed limits in the United States based largely on how fast drivers actually travel. This is due to the 85% rule, which ties speed limits to the speed of the 15th-fastest vehicle out of every 100 traveling a road in ideal conditions. Critics say this approach encourages speeding. Ohio is among the states considering new guidelines that focus more on safety. But supporters of the rule say it provides the safer approach by limiting the speed discrepancy between drivers who abide by the posted sign and those who ignore it because the road design allows them to do so.

Man faces charges for drawing chalk crosswalk at intersection he says is dangerous

Using spray chalk, an activist for pedestrian safety created a makeshift crosswalk at an intersection in what the city calls an act of vandalism.

False And driving above the speed limit is a direct factor in the likelihood of a road fatality Speed limit of 25? If your drive 20 you'll only kill someone 10% of the time. Driving 30? Close to 50/50 odds you would kill a pedestrian ALWAYS DRIVE UNDER THE SPEED LIMIT #TwentyIsPlenty

Oh my look at that: lower speed limits lower car insurance costs.

“Some UK insurers are observing that areas where 20mph zones have been introduced result in lower levels of claim frequency – a key factor in the cost of car insurance.”

Another smash in Lawrie Park Road as a car apparently loses control and smashes into a parked car lifting it onto the pavement. Quite a smash for a 20 mph zone.

People shocked but hopefully not hurt. This is a road used by many cyclists who have to gamble as cars speed down a street narrowed by parked cars dodge around each other.

One is going to die. Hope it's not me.

Another great video by @notjustbikes where he totally destroys the arguments against 20mph (30kmph) speed limits on city streets.

I’m lucky to live in a city where 20mph is now the norm, and was introduced before our car-brained Prime Minister sided with the car lobby and right-wingers to campaign against lowering the limits. As a result, our streets feel safer and are much quieter than those I grew up around. 🤫
