This is the “third space” of the Iván de Vargas public library in Madrid, right in the city centre. The library is open for weekends. Last weekend I was there reading for a while; since I don’t really enjoy reading in the study room, I sat in the third space instead. I was afraid the security guard would come over to tell me I couldn’t stay there (it’s happened to me in some libraries where they want you to read only at the study tables, but I never read like that at home). But something nice happened instead: the security person came by just to set the heating thermostat.

Our Library Science faculty at the Complutense University of Madrid works closely with this library. Last year I supervised a master’s final project based on a service-learning collaboration with them.

Study (and relax) spaces at the University of Amsterdam. I think they are part of the library (https://uba.uva.nl/en/visiting-and-studying/study-spaces/study-spaces.html). I spent 3 motnhs in #Amsterdam from July to October 2018 for a research stay with Frank Huysmans. I enjoyed the city riding my bike and using these study spaces. I went there every day! Maybe someone who is in Amsterdam could add a photo of the study spaces as they are now.

In these pictures: Eugenio Trías Municipal Public Library, located inside El Retiro Park, #Madrid. Probably one of the most beautiful libraries in the city — surrounded by gardens, trees, and quiet corners for reading. Once the Casa de Fieras, the old zoo pavilion of El Retiro Park, it’s now a luminous, welcoming library: great change. 🕊️🌿

And it’s open on Saturday and Sunday mornings — perfect for a peaceful weekend visit. ☀️📖

José Saramago Municipal Public Library, #Madrid. I didn’t know it and had it on my list to visit. I liked it; very attractive spaces both inside and outside. It’s right next to the La Vaguada shopping mall — almost as its opposite. In a park, with a pond and ducks. The collection is not very big, but I’d say they’ve clearly invested in the spaces…
