Trunkfriends v0.4 is now out, and available as install packages for Windows & Debian linux flavours, as well as platform JAR For Windows, Linux (x86) and OSX (x86 and M series)

Not only does Trunkfriends help you detect loss of friends due to defederation, and can help in reconnecting.

But, it can save you if your instance dies, as it holds info of who you follow.

It helps you add selected new followers to lists you might want to put them on.

Trunkfriends

Peeps running #Trunkfriends from source can now pull / download latest commit and get the ability to select & copy accounts out of Trunkfriends and onto the clipboard.

I will wrap up a new release at least by next weekend, so regular installs can be upgraded.

Account names have been animalified for anonymity.

Things are a bit slow due to a lot of "real life work stress".

Anyway, being able to copy users account handles out of trunkfriends is kinda important if you want to reconnect with people.

This weeks "work feature" will be allowing the user to select one or more accounts, so they end up on the clipboard, and can be pasted wherever.

My mate needs this to reconnect with people after they relocated to a new instance, and others can end up in the same situation...

This weekend!

Weekly update page can be found here

https://steinareliassen.github.io/trunkfriends/project_updates.html

A couple of bugs have been fixed, and install files for windows & debian (ubuntu etc) has been put up.

Things are definitely not streamlined yet, and if anything is unclear, please send me a private message here.

"Delayed release"

I got the install package for Windows, tested it and all worked well. Until I tried to refresh followers.

The installed package that Jetpack Compose created, for some reason does not have network access.

This application is pretty near useless without network access.

I hope I can figure this out, if it takes to long, I will release a platform JAR instead.

Working on new features in parallel.

From now, there will be weekly updates to avoid spamming you.

Banner logo I did for my hubby's ( @lettosprey ) new desktop app, @trunkfriends, which notifies you if you've lost any friends or followers in case of instance defederation. If you use it, we suggest running it at least twice a month, to help you keep track of your connections here! :)

Introduction to using #trunkfriends is soon done, available on a branch here if anyone wants to read (and feel free to give feedback)

Working on the release packacking now, first out windows then debian. This is a lill delayed as my mate had a medical eye emergency this week (that fortunately went well).

They are now working on user icon for the app & pages + banners for readme & our mastodon account! It looks lovely, stay tuned!

A tool to track your connections in the fediverse. - steinareliassen/trunkfriends

Since anything I write here is not visible to some servers that has defederated with tech.lgbt, I decided to set up an account for #TrunkFriends on mastodon.social, so that people could get info about the project despite being on servers that aggressively defederate with other instances, like mastodon.art, since they tend to let mastodon.social be due to it's size and significance.

I did not expect much when setting it up and posting about the project, thought it would be fun if I got a couple of people following the account and maybe a couple of boots.

After two days, the account now has more followers than my personal account.

I am completely terrified. The source code is still a mess, probably contains annoying bugs and is not even at a beta state.

And a bit sad. While Trunkfriends has other usages and will get more features that are not related to tracking if you have lost connection with friends due to defederation, I suspect near everyone follow the project page because of this.

So, what does #Trunkfriends look like? The UI is still quite horrible, but to give an idea. Every time you scan your followers / following lists, it records changes compared to previous fetches and displays these visually. Finger pointing at you means are they following you, finger pointing left means are you following them. Green means yes, red means no.

green -> red means that you were following (or they were a follower of you) but are not anymore.

It then groups these in timeslots based on when you fetched the lists.

As seen on the images, after checking on 20/10-23 (10-20-23 US ...) stuff happened. I lost connection to several mastodon.art users.

I guess most people know why...

Now, I can press on the spyglass next to a user to "zoom" in on that user and see all the recorded activities with them.

The usernames and account names are hashed for anonymity for these screenshots, they will show up normally though :)

#TrunkFriends is an desktop app in development, used to track who you follow and who follows you. It will get more features shortly, but due to defederation issues, tracking followers is the main focus.

The last week I have implented multiple server support and easy authentication towards the instances you use.

What is left is making the UI a lot more pretty, and writing a bit more documentation. Hopefully something can be released in a couple of weeks.

I'll post some screenshots soon :P
