Episode 10 – At the intersection of being trans and having gendered cancer - PART II: Interview with James Moriarty and Dr. Joannie Neveu by Public Interest Group on Cancer Research

On behalf of the Public Interest Group on Cancer Research, welcome to Episode 10 of our podcast series!   Our special guests today are James Moriarty and Dr. Joannie Neveu 😊 James is a transgender man with a history of cancer living in Newfoundland and Labrador. We are delighted that James has joined us for the second time! 😊 James was our first ever guest in this podcast series (check his first podcast here: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/sevtap-savas/episodes/At-the-intersection-of-being-trans-and-having-gendered-cancer-A-candid--timely--and-educational-conversation-with-James-Moriarty-e2ftaoe) Dr. Neveu is an Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Memorial University of Newfoundland, and Gynecologic Oncologist in NL Health Services. Her practice includes caring for transgender men with cancer. In this episode: ·       We continue our conversation with James about his unique and valuable perspectives and thoughts about being a transgender person and being affected by cancer ·       Dr. Neveu and James talk about cancer care in the province, knowns and unknowns about caring for transgender folks with cancer, existing issues, and lessons learnt & taught along the way   It appears that there is so much unknown about how to best care for transgender individuals (with or without cancer) in the clinic. We hope that this conversation will provide some insight and motivate all of us to do better and implement appropriate care for the transgender community. Moreover, it is obvious that we have a lot to correct in terms of our language and conversations involving transgender individuals and gender diverse individuals. Please join us by learning more about these. We hope that you will like and appreciate this episode. For questions/comments please contact Sevtap at savas{at}mun.ca. Idaho can enforce ban on gender-affirming care, Supreme Court says

The Supreme Court is allowing Idaho to enforce its ban on gender-affirming care for transgender youth while lawsuits over the law proceed, reversing lower courts. The justices’ order Monday allows the state to put in place a 2023 law that subjects physicians to up to 10 years in prison if they provide hormones, puberty blockers or other gender-affirming care to people under age 18. Under the court’s order, the two transgender teens who sued to challenge the law still will be able to obtain care. The court’s three liberal justices would have kept the law on hold. A federal judge in Idaho had blocked the law in its entirety, saying that it was necessary to do so to protect the teens.

At the intersection of being trans and having gendered cancer: A candid, timely, and educational conversation with James Moriarty by Public Interest Group on Cancer Research

On behalf of the Public Interest Group on Cancer Research, welcome to Episode 2 of our podcast series! We have a very special guest today, James Moriarty! 😊 In this episode, James provides his experience and thoughts about cancer, cancer screening, and cancer care experiences as a transgender man in Newfoundland and Labrador. All very important topics, considering that we have around 60,000 transgender men and women in Canada, and they too can develop cancer. Being a transgender person, having a gendered cancer, jumping over the many cracks, advocating for better conditions, and educating everyone – literally – about what needs to improve in healthcare and community is not an easy job. We – Janine, Jason, and Sevtap – thank James for educating all of us by sharing his story, knowledge, and insight. We will do our part and educate ourselves further. We all should do. Please join us.
