Mostly #Wordpress, yeah, assuming they're not just hosting on the existing Webtoon/Tapas/ComicFury/etc infrastructure.

If you want something simple but customizable, give #ComicFury a try. (It's free, so if you don't stick with it, no loss.)

If you go with WP, get the #Toocheke plugin+theme combo. It's versatile, pretty easy to use, and actively being maintained.

Some creators also swear by #Grawlix. And #ComicControl is a new one in development that looks promising, but I'm not sure if it's available for beta testing yet.

First constructive thing of the day: sent an email to the #Toocheke people following up on the issue with the lack of widget areas and arguing for creating one under the Support/Social Sharing section.
After this, I'll let it rest - they've been helpful enough. But I did mention that I couldn't use the social sharing buttons in the first place because my static site generation plugin breaks them. Not their problem to solve but a use case they might not have considered.

Meanwhile! I've been very critical of the #Toocheke theme for #Webcomics but it has a few advantages: one is that it works and is actively updated to work with new versions of #Wordpress. You can't beat that.

The other is that when I asked about adding widgets to content areas in the archives that are currently inaccessible, Brian at Leetoo.com just went ahead and wrote me a child theme that gave me that access. And maybe that will end up in your child theme too!

It looks like the section of the comics pages in the archives where I want to put the ComicAd ad is unreachable through the widget system. I can add a widget in the Author Comment area on the front page, but it is not copied in the single comics page. Which means that I'm going to have to ask someone who knows PHP to add the ad to the child theme for me. Bummer.

For bug reporting reference: I just exported the self-hosted HTML pages for the latest Tess Durban update, and I can confirm that #Toocheke is currently putting chapters in alphabetical order despite the sequential order being correctly entered. Worth keeping an eye on if you're using Toocheke/Toocheke Companion.

Adding thumbnails and hero graphics to the new staging site. So far, so good.

Now, cast pages. The default cast template in the #Toocheke theme is, frankly, useless. Like, if you have four characters in your entire comic, it's probably adequate, but I'm at 43 with less than a quarter of the archive entered. It doesn't scale.

I'll probably end up looking for a webcartoonist with a Toocheke-based site and a good cast section, and ask them nicely for their code.

OK, so migrating a #webcomic from #ComicEasel to #Toocheke retains all the transcripts (but you'll need to do some manual work to make them show up again) but destroys all the character, tag and location info. For even a sub-100-page archive, this is a big downside and honestly the sort of thing that would earn it a bad review.

I've been quiet lately, but that's because I've been neck-deep in website and database stuff πŸ™ƒ

The plugin I use for my comic site stopped working like 5 years ago, which was fine until it broke when I was forced to update PHP versions. Thus began the tedious process of export/import, database hacks, and manual updates to convert from #Webcomic to #Toocheke. Fortunately the new site looks good, I kept my comments, and now I have cool stuff like arrow key navigation.

The multi-language feature only supports two languages and supports them badly - A click on a cryptically designed "language" icon causes a javascript to run that replaces the images and blog with the version in the other language. Clicking on any link from there will return you to the first language (English, in my case). This is no more useful than not having multiple languages at all.
