After 1st draft was done? My training story comes to mind which exists in 11 different versions and will never be published.
During drafting? #TimeCurves was initially planned as High Fantasy. But I stumbled across #TimeTravelAuthors and decided to let my MCs travel through time instead of magical words.

I don't use them much - mostly, when something truly traumatic happened in the narrator's past. Jules and Vera both don't have such a trauma.
