This is when I (once again) encourage our group here to take in a few of the Canadian domestic productions that are featuring some of our Star Trek cast.

#SurrealEstate, #Transplant, #ThePorter, #Hallmark and #Lifetime romance movies.

Also, the Canadian indie films that they’ve starred in.

Hey Star Trek fans, there’s still a couple of days left in Black History Month 2024.

While there have been many reflections over the month about the franchise’s contributions to representation and inclusion, I’d like to encourage you take another step.

Looking beyond some of our favourite Trek actors’ performances in the franchise, many have also contributed to bringing Black history and experience to screen. LeVar Burton in Roots, Whoopi Goldberg in The Colour Purple among others.

One performance that may be less well known outside Canada is Discovery's Ronnie Rowe Jr’s principal role in The Porter. It’s a historical drama series about the 1920s movement for unionization of Black porters on North American passenger rail trains. It was a CBC/BET+ coproduction and is available through a variety of streamers outside the region.

Check it out.

The Porter - CBC Media Centre

Inspired by real events and set in the roar of the 1920s, THE PORTER (8x60) follows the journeys of an ensemble of characters who hustle, dream, cross borders and pursue their ambitions in the fight for liberation - on and off the railways that crossed North America. It is a gripping story of empowerment and idealism that highlights the moment when railway workers from both Canada and the United States joined together to give birth to the world’s first Black union. Set primarily in Montreal, Chicago and Detroit as the world rebuilds after the First World War, THE PORTER depicts the Black community in St. Antoine, Montreal - known, at the time, as the “Harlem of the North.” They’re young, gifted and Black, from Canada, the Caribbean, and the U.S. via the Underground Railroad and through the Great Migration, and they find themselves thrown together north and south of the colour line, in an era that boasts anything is possible - but if change isn’t coming for them, they will come for it. By any means necessary.

Sharing appreciation of #RonnieRoweJr who plays Bryce in #StarTrekDiscovery.

Really wish we’d gotten to know #StarTrek’s RA Bryce better - pilot, Comms officer, engineer, he was always cool. But recognize Rowe has been busy bringing representation to lead and principal roles in other projects.

Really appreciate this #CanadianScreenAwards recognized talent in his other work in #ThePorter, #PrettyHardCases, #BlackCop, #AkillasEscape & #Hallmark movies.
