San Francisco supervisor who turned highway into park now faces recall

A San Francisco supervisor who pushed to turn a 2-mile stretch of highway into a car-free park faces a recall vote in his district. Tuesday's election is San Francisco's third recall in four years. The recall of Supervisor Joel Engardio might prevent other politicians from making controversial decisions unpopular with their constituents. The supervisor's critics say he betrayed his constituents and ignored their concerns. His supporters say the supervisor is being punished unfairly. Voters in San Francisco recalled three school board members and District Attorney Chesa Bousin in 2022.

They stood and caught their breath at the big intersection at Eight Temples, the closest thing to a downtown in this part of The Great Highway in the Sky. They looked out over the vast city and its building and smoke and all manner of creatures rushing from place to place. They felt at once like gods, invisible observers and fearless adventurers.

"Granpuh, I have...A Question", Rusty declared.

"I win!", Rusty yelled as he skidded to a halt, looking back.

"Only by a whisk, maybe I let you win...", said Granpuh Grey coming to a sharp stop, cocking a toothy smile, "have you considered that?"

Rusty wrinkled his nose and rolled his eyes, "You WISH! I'm the fastest kid on the WHOLE Great Highway!", he said as he widened his arms to take in the whole expanse of his world.

"Maybe, but there is more to the world than this little one, much more.", said Grey.
