So my kid reading #theGreatBooks at #stJohnsCollege has this to say about her freshman year reading so far: the ancient Greeks were really serious about their pederasty. Every time we talk about what she's reading in addition to whatever merits a book possesses it's also measured on a scale of how many creepily casual references to boys in particular there are. Translations are apparently measurable for their faithful quality by how much they elide it. Don't get me wrong, I do assume that kids learn a lot about both sex and history in college and I don't object. I just didn't foresee this particular wrinkle in her classics education -- though I read enough Plato in college myself if I'd thought about it, I guess I knew.
