When Charles Dances communes with the devil, the voice sounded very familiar. I thought “Is he talking to Dr Claw from Inspector Gadget?”

But it’s even more familiar than that, since the voice is Frank Welker.

Frank Welker is one of the most famous voice actors of all time, voicing Fred from Scooby Doo, Megatron and a whole heap of others.

Wikipedia reckons he is also the 4th highest grossing actor of all time!

So ‘The Golden Child’ ended being essentially the film I remembered it as.

Sporadically interesting and awesome, but overall a mess.

Eddie Murphy’s shtick which worked really well in Beverly Hills Cop feels misapplied here. He too often feels like a cultural buffoon, ridiculing foreigners.

The overall structure is goofy too, with an extended trip to Nepal to get a Macguffin.

All that said, I still like it when the 80s effects kick in.
