Tostada de Birria (from PiKante). A highlight of A Taste of Edmonton—yum!

For over 30 years, Taste of Edmonton has brought our community together to enjoy amazing local flavours right in the heart of our downtown. It was so wonderful to visit with Her Honour, Lieutenant Governor Salma Lakhani as we celebrated Edmontons food scene. #yeg #tasteofedmonton #yegdt #yegfood
@likelyjanlukas Dash outside to #TasteOfEdmonton and cash in your pre-bought sheets of tickets while we have this window of opportunity!
Forgot #TasteOfEdmonton was on tonight. Dragonfruit rolls and taro fries from Da Kao, and interesting mini pumpkin pancakes with red bean stuffing from Dagu Rice Noodle (rather like a pumpkin based deep fried mochi). 🤤 Also a nice idea to introduce a market row this year! #YEGfood #YEGdt
You have your little reasonably-priced hole-in-the-wall places whose primary market is the actual Vietnamese community and is thus faithful to their culinary traditions. And then you have your cleaned-up, priced-up, blandified food fad Vietnamese which gets booths at #tasteofedmonton and targets people who have heard of Vietnamese food but never been to the former.
@mastermaq Yeah. It might have been a bit rough around the edges (because it's the first one they really did and it was put together on a short timeframe), but I think I like stuff like this more than big festivals. Things like #tasteofedmonton can be extremely expensive not just for attendees but for would be vendors. And this promotes our local restaurant scene rather than cannibalizing it to promote stuff geared for a more suburban set.
Took the other half on a nice little #yegbike trip to OTTO last night. It's not a bad ride from downtown, down 102A Ave to 96 St, to the LRT MUP, north on 92 street then over on 114. The one weak spot (apart from #tasteofedmonton detritus around the Square) is where 92 street crosses 107 Ave because it has one of those lights that never changes unless you dismount for the beg button or you're in a car. 112 Ave has a bike sensor, and north of it are counterflow bike lanes the whole way.

I see that #tasteofedmonton left 99 street in quite the shabby state, which seems about par for the course.

So as much as I dislike #tasteofedmonton for all manner of reasons ranging from its food quality to its environment to its lack of consideration for the neighbourhood to the fact that I'm just not sure that it's actually good for #yegdt because downtown's retail is mostly restaurants at this point... here's something nice!

Chinatown After Dark

I remember when my company moved downtown in Sept 2019 we were so excited we’d be just 2 blocks from #TasteOfEdmonton next summer and could go for lunch ... and then Covid hit 😢 ☣️ 😭

So 2023 is the first year I actually got to walk over at lunch with actual human coworkers and try out the foods together! Pictured: poke donut (so cute - basically a deconstructed sushi roll); brisket potato boat; Summer Erdmann’s Salad Wrap (tasty peanut sauce); pulled pork bao. 😋🤤
