For Edmonton folks I've heard a report that the High Level Bridge is closed right now but I don't know why. The two most common things are a truck got stuck and a mental health call. :/

this week's weird obscure local canadian history post:

for decades, Edmonton had a landmark known only by locals as the "rat hole". it was a tiny underpass with extremely narrow lanes. it was so narrow that, most edmontonians with wide vehicles would roll down their driver's side window, and fold inward their side mirror to prevent it from hitting an oncoming vehicle's mirror. it was dark, smelly, and flooded after any decent rainstorm

when it was closed in 2000, people specifically went there to take a "last drive" through and celebrated along the sides of the road 😆

one thing i love about this place is that edmontonians are the first people to recognize and celebrate how dank this place is. i've heard the same "yer not a real city!" refrain from visiting torontonians. and the most edmontonian reply is, "yeah! isn't it great?"
