Scotland is wild, passing by Ruthven Barracks near Kingussie. TGO Challenge, May 2023.

I've just heard the sad news that Roger Smith died on 7th October.

Roger was the founding editor of The Great Outdoors magazine and the driving force behind the TGO Challenge, the self-supported walk across the Scottish Highlands which has taken place in Spring each year since 1980 and which I have completed myself.

Roger was so supportive to new Challengers and had an amazing ability to put names to faces. I was amazed that he congratulated me by name when I arrived at the Park Hotel on completing my second crossing after having met me only once before 12 months previously.

A sad loss to the Scottish hillwalking community.

9.5 hours into the Journey to the beginning of the #TGOChallenge still an hour to go but the weather is gorgeous out there. 4th train and the views are spectacular
For #NationalLighthouseDay, here is Rubha nan Gall near Tobermory, Mull. I walked out to the lighthouse before starting my 2021 #TGOChallenge from Kilchoan.

(Great to see Denis Pigeon making an appearance in this installment. I was only thinking about him recently and the long section of the TGO we did together, him wearing Crocs for some of it. Was that really over a decade ago? I fear it was)

Some highlight of my coast-to-coast in Scotland. Went from Mallaig to Montrose. About 300km. My first time to Scotland and the highlands. Great experience but I bit too much road walking for my taste.

I don't know how many of you are here but....

To all my #TGOChallenge friends and all First Timers - I hope you have a grand crossing.

The boggiest bog and the roughest
heather and the wettest rain are all just there to help you enjoy the beautiful blue sky, the gentle breeze and the mandatory cake stops.

Enjoy it!
