Good news! This was shot down last night by the Sun Prairie city council.
Less good news, it was largely for procedural reasons.
Right now, we only have 7 of 8 alders because one of the alders was elected as mayor. One alder wasn't present last night.
The police were requesting a budget amendment to pay for the new cameras. Budget amendments require six Yea votes to pass, regardless of how many alders are actually present (as long as there's quorum, anyway).
With six alders present, only two voted against the budget amendment, which was obviously enough to stop the expansion for now, but it likely means that it'll get funded during the next budget cycle and there's probably not a desire by the majority of the council to remove the existing cameras.

Deeply disappointed in my community tonight. I watched several dozen people weaponize supposed concerns about watershed issues with a property to attempt to block the development of that land into a first-of-its-kind transitional housing project. There is no way that it is mere coincidence that the Venn diagram of the people with these flooding concerns and the people who oppose the development for other reasons is a circle.
Excellent second meeting of the Sun Prairie Housing Coalition. We had presentations from Dane County and the city looking at existing housing issues and trends for the next 20+ years. The situation is dire, but work is being put in at every level to try and correct course. I'm optimistic.
Next step is for coalition members to break into work groups. I signed up for the policy group, but also offered to help with web development as needed.
