Once widespread across southern #Asia, the animal now only survives on the islands of #Sumatra & #Borneo. Fewer than 14,000 #SumatranOrangutans remain in the wild, alongside just 800 Tapanuli #orangutans & about 104,700 Bornean orangutans, according to #conservation groups.
“These bridges allow orangutans to move, to mix, to maintain healthy populations,” Siregar said. “It reduces the risk of #extinction.”

A part of me can’t believe that my local zoo actually did this, but then if it helps bring a spotlight to a critically endangered species, I guess I’m all for it. 🤷🏻‍♂️

D.J. is an 11-month-old Sumatran orangutan (Pongo abelii) and Dirgahayu “Ayu” is an 11-month-old federally endangered Bornean orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus). Unfortunately, both species are listed as critically endangered by IUCN, in large part due to the palm oil crisis. Both of these juvenile primates are cared for by the Taman Safari in Bogor, West Java, Indonesia.
