Budapest, 1950. Undoubtedly the worst Hungarian leader of modern times was Mátyás Rákosi, seen here with some of his adoring supporters. A committed Stalinist, he ruled Hungary from 1945 to 1956, brooking no opposition and with an obscene cult of the personality. He established Hungary's only gulag/forced labour camp at Resck. A thoroughly unpleasant and dislikable man. He died in exile in Moscow.
