"One thing that definitely happened is that Dutch security services kept lists of suspect populations – radical trade unionists, communists – and the lists were supposedly burned when the Germans invaded in May 1940,” he said.

“But copies were sent to local police stations, and the German security service in the occupied Netherlands put together the pieces of the puzzle. The Dutch security services had particular hang-ups about leftists, whom they considered a more acute and imminent danger to Dutch democracy and society. A lot of these people were horrifically tortured for information and then sent to die. This history is complicated by the perhaps overzealous activities of the Dutch security services and the active assistance of Dutch police."

Dutch row over which victims of Nazis get ‘stumbling stone’ plaques

Commemorations of 45 people ‘experimentally’ gassed reveal dark moments in the Netherlands’ history

Stumbling stones

Elia Gino Musatti was a Venetian Jew, born in 1877 into a well-off family. His father was a doctor, and his brother a lawyer.

When Northern Italy came under Nazi occupation in 1943, he was in hospital and therefore evaded the first round of deportations of the Venetian Jews.

However, in October 1944, the Nazis went through the hospitals too, and arrested all the Jews they found.

Musatti was on train n. 41T for the concentration camp in Ravensbrück in November 1944. He did not survive.

Today a stumbling stone was placed in front of the door of his home in Salizada dei Greci, in Castello.

Cities often know quite well about their stumbling stones. Yet the don't often take care of them.

Sometimes it's those people who organised them being laid.
In other cases it's people like me who want to make sure that what we must #NeverForget what happened.
I do that on a voluntary base and as,a hobby. See pictures. They also show which wadding polish and cloths I use.
