In the dream, he stood in a valley, the hills curving up and up on either side of him, rising toward a sky full of cloud or smoke or both. An endless red fire spread away from him, devouring the grasses and the scrublands and the forests. The clouds' underbellies shone red and orange with reflected flames. Embers rose into the night, winking like a million stars in restless constellations.
