A Cratera Stickney, a maior cratera da lua marciana Fobos, recebeu o nome de Chloe Angeline Stickney Hall, matemática e esposa do astrônomo Asaph Hall. Asaph Hall descobriu ambas as luas do Planeta Vermelho em 1877. Com mais de 9 quilômetros de diâmetro, Stickney tem quase metade do diâmetro de Fobos, tão grande que o impacto que explodiu a cratera provavelmente chegou perto de destruir a pequena lua. Esta imagem colorida aprimorada de Stickney e arredores foi registrada pela câmera HiRISE a bordo do Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter quando passou a cerca de seis mil quilômetros de Fobos em março de 2008. Mesmo que a gravidade da superfície de Fobos semelhante a um asteroide seja inferior a 1/ Gravidade da 1000ª Terra, estrias sugerem que material solto deslizou para dentro das paredes da cratera ao longo do tempo. Regiões azuladas perto da borda da cratera podem indicar uma superfície relativamente exposta recentemente. New modeling indicates that the grooves on #Mars’ moon #Phobos could be produced by tidal forces—the mutual gravitational pull of the planet and the moon. Initially, scientists had thought the grooves were created by the massive impact that made #Stickney crater (lower right).

Image of #Phobos from the #Mars #ReconnaissanceOrbiter with #Stickney crater on the right. Phobos is the larger of Mars' two moons and is 17 x 14 x 11 miles (27 by 22 by 18 kilometers) in diameter. It orbits Mars three times a day, and is so close to the planet's surface that in some locations on Mars it cannot always be seen.
