The city of #Chicago today celebrated #StPatricksDay with their annual tradition of dyeing the Chicago River GREEN.

The modern dye coloring formula is actually orange (😲) and plant-based, so it is NOT toxic to the environment. The original formula would dye the water for over a week, but the modern plant-based formula lasts only for a few hours.

The tradition began in 1962, when someone noticed a plumber with his pants stained green from wading in the Chicago River. At the time, the city was using an oil-based green dye to trace how their waste water was impacting the river. A local businessman took inspiration from the green-pants plumber, and began the tradition as a way to bring public attention to the need for protecting the natural enviroment.
