Spotted Hyena
I'm not sure why hyenas get such a bad rap. They're truly beautiful, no to mention multitalented- they can both hunt and scavenge well. As hunters they can easily kill an antelope or a wildebeest. As scavengers, they will clean up the whole animal, even the bones. They are affectionate and protective with their clanmates, are great communicators, and take great care of their babies.

Una iena per amica - Radio3 Scienza - Da secoli sono guardate con sospetto, se non con disprezzo, vittime di pregiudizi e di quell'aura di timore che circonda ogni predatore della savana che si rispetti. Eppure ad Harar, una città di circa 150.000 abitanti nell'est dell'Etiopia, iene ed esseri umani hanno stabilito un rapporto speciale, se non unico: qui le iene vengono nutrite e accudite. Ogni sera, la gente del posto offre loro cestini ricolmi di ossa e brandelli di carne infilati su lunghi spiedini, con cui gli stessi abitanti le imboccano. E da tempo ormai questa pratica ha attirato un certo flusso di turisti, che pagano per assistere e nutrire a loro volta le iene. L'antropologo australiano Marcus Baynes-Rock ha vissuto tra queste iene e i loro umani per diverso tempo, studiando e ammirando la loro peculiare relazione, come racconta in "La vita segreta delle iene" (Adelphi, 2024). Twin brother spotted hyenas are often attracted to the same new group when they disperse from their birth group
In most mammals, males disperse to a new group after reaching sexual maturity. Dispersal often entails costs and is risky. New results from spotted hyenas show that males from the same birth group—and particularly twin brothers—very often disperse together and choose the same group to breed. The coordination is likely the combined result of males having similar preferences when they have a similar social and genetic background, and of related males actively sticking together to support one another.
