Another wonderful interview by @savetz, this time with Tom Zimmerman, part of the four-person team at Atari that worked on the never-released AMY sound chip: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atari_AMY

Tom comes across as an absolute gentleman.

His description of what the AMY could do is terrific. It synthesised audio using up to 16 oscillators for the fundamental and harmonics to build rich, complex sounds. It could also be run "in reverse"; quoting Wikipedia:

An input sample could be run through a Fast Fourier transform to extract the spectral pattern, and then that pattern could be input to the AMY to set up the oscillators.

Tom contrasts the AMY's design against FM synths like the #YamahaDX7 and sample-based synthesizers.

Tom's words of wisdom at the end of the interview are wonderful too. A recommended listen, even if #Atari isn't your thing.

First I collected some ideas for text based sequencing in order to fill in the ability realm of #Ableton Live. I’ve took some essential hints from Atari #Notator which are part of Apple’s #Logic now.

I think I was guided by Millward’s #Soundsynthesis with VST instruments. Mixed it up with R #soundanalysis by Jerome Sueur and produced a first glimpse into sound synthesis at

Now I’m figuring out how to funnel midi output of #lilypond composition driven by #SQLite repositories into #chuck processing lines.

My integrated development environment IDE is #orgmode -> #emacs -> Debian. Also experienced Ubuntu and endeavorOS, but definitely 100% gnu Linux. Well I maintain a service line to #PureData.

I closed a weird childhood loop tonight. In the early 90's, my favorite arcade had a vertical shooter, unremarkable except for the soundtrack: two recorded pieces of rock music. At the time, this was a technical marvel.

The boss music featured a singer, whose voice pierced through the arcade noise as a spine-chilling androgynous wail.

Thanks @CheesestringXX at YouTube, for the "Best arcade shooters of the 80s and 90s" video: The game is "Meta Fox", by Seta.

The solo video doesn't convey the strangeness, the spectral voice shrieking in a packed hall of crunchy, bloopy arcade machines. Hypnotic and haunting nostalgia.
