An out of season photo of Window Buttress on Simonside Crag, just to warm things up a it. The "window" was formed when the whole place was at the bottom of an ice sheet with high pressure meltwater scouring around. Beacuse this area is never "managed" the plants are as they should be in this habitat, heather, bilberries, a little bracken and a woodrush #Crag #Rock #RockFormation #Northumberland #SImonside #Landscape #Geography #Geology

I made it to the summit. The walk back along the ridge is spectacular.

I was just going to do a short walk along to Whitton Hillhead, down through Newtown and back along the river. Then I saw Simonside covered in heather peaking above the forest. I have to go there!

I hiked up Simonside today. As I wanted to avoid the steep western path in the icy conditions but make it a mostly round walk I took an unconventional route basically going straight up to the ridge from Simonside car park. This was more difficult than expected, my feet sinking in the snow to well above my knees on the bit between the ridge walk and the actual ridge.

I was busy all day, but then went out for a quick evening walk. I was rewarded by the sun setting over the snow covered Simonside hills.

Today I took a walk from my house to Garleigh hill, just south of Rothbury, at the east end of the Simonside hills. It was cold, and with the brisk breeze at the top I didn't stay at the summit for long.

A nice view of Simonside from the track that passes Old Rothbury Hill Fort.
