SHUT DOWN LINE 5 ❕🌊

Last week, we rallied in St Paul to demanding a halt to construction on the Enbridge Line 5 pipeline now underway in northern Wisconsin. The St. Paul District of the Army Corps has federal permitting jurisdiction over the Wisconsin pipeline project, which would install new pipe and cross 186 water bodies, threatening the water of the entire Great Lakes. No new pipelines in Wisconsin or Michigan! No reroute for Enbridge greed!

Thank you to all who joined in solidarity with Bad River. This action was a partnership with Indigenous Environmental Network, The Red Nation, Mukwa, Indigenous Protector Movement, Climate Justice Committee, Sierra Club North Star Chapter, Anti War Committee, and Sunrise Twin Cities!

“We will continue to press forward in this fight. Line 5, tunnel or not, isn’t doing the US any favors. This is a Canadian pipeline that benefits Canadian consumers, while putting US residents and treaty-protected waterways at great risk,” [Bay Mills President Whitney] Gravelle said. #ShutDownLine5

Powerful action in WI today to #ShutDownLine5!

"Activists say that the aging Line 5 should be shut down rather than rerouted due to the imminent threat of an oil spill, its violation of Indigenous treaty rights, and the need to stop the fossil fuel extraction that is driving the climate crisis."

“There’s a certain amount of hubris involved in saying we’re going to stick a 40-mile pipeline through the earth, and if we mess up these wetlands that nature has created over thousands of years, we’ll just put them back together again." #ShutDownLine5

Despite overwhelming public opposition, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) approved permits on Friday for Canadian oil giant Enbridge to reroute its Line 5 pipeline around and upstream of the Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Reservation, where it has operated in illegal trespass for over a decade.

Enbridge still needs federal approval from the US Army Corps of Engineers, which in August received more than 150,000 comments from project opponents, including health professionals, faith groups, and regional businesses. This is the response from Chairman Blanchard and the Band’s attorneys at EarthJustice. Graphics via Communities United by Water. #ShutDownLine5

Amazing turnout last night at the Ridgedale Library for a showing of the Bad River documentary with our friends at the Sierra Club North Star Chapter! Met some new people interested in organizing and got lots of postcards to Gov. Evers in Wisconsin asking him to #ShutDownLine5.

In the picture, Three Waters team member Tommy speaks to the crowd following the movie.

Powerful gathering tonight in Duluth at the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women & Relatives Concert & Art Show hosted by Native Lives Matter Twin Ports. We're tabling next to fellow water protectors at the Tamarack Water Alliance, collecting postcards to send to the Wisconsin governor asking he support the Bad River Band in shutting down Line 5. #ShutDownLine5 #MMIWR
