The Mary Sue

I didn’t remember The Radiant Emperor being both this gay and this sapphic. I’m not complaining though. More than anything, can it for the first part of the duology be even defined sapphic? Ma doesn’t know Zhu isn’t a man, just as Ma doesn’t know Zhu is attracted by feminine men and women. Of course my favourite ship from it is Ouyang and Esen though, so Ma and Zhu aren’t really my area of expertize

I forgot yesterday, so I’m doing it now.

Happy pride month to the most suicidal, masochistic and misogynistic bitchboy twink to ever exist. We see your and Esen’s homosexuality just as everyone around the two of you, Ouyang. Have fun with your boyfriend and his loser brother

I was a week and a half too late for this.

For "reasons" I haven't managed to read/finish any books the last few years. However, this challenge and coincidence pushed me over the edge; finished She Who Became the Sun in a couple of days. What a ride. Prime material for a #cdrama / #kdrama

She Who Became the Sun - BookWyrm

She Who Became the Sun reimagines the rise to power of the Ming Dynasty’s founding emperor.

To possess the Mandate of Heaven, the female monk Zhu will do anything

“I refuse to be nothing…”

In a famine-stricken village on a dusty yellow plain, two children are given two fates. A boy, greatness. A girl, nothingness…

In 1345, China lies under harsh Mongol rule. For the starving peasants of the Central Plains, greatness is something found only in stories. When the Zhu family’s eighth-born son, Zhu Chongba, is given a fate of greatness, everyone is mystified as to how it will come to pass. The fate of nothingness received by the family’s clever and capable second daughter, on the other hand, is only as expected.

When a bandit attack orphans the two children, though, it is Zhu Chongba who succumbs to despair and dies. Desperate to escape her own fated death, the girl uses her brother's identity to enter a monastery as a young male novice. There, propelled by her burning desire to survive, Zhu learns she is capable of doing whatever it takes, no matter how callous, to stay hidden from her fate.

After her sanctuary is destroyed for supporting the rebellion against Mongol rule, Zhu takes the chance to claim another future altogether: her brother's abandoned greatness.

voodoocactus's review of She Who Became the Sun (The Radiant Emperor, #1)

4/5: For some reason, it took me a while to get into this. Perhaps I’ve just been reading too much c-novels and I’m getting oversaturated. Perhaps I just wanted something else. I was rather surprised by my reaction because I loved The Water Outlaws and I should’ve loved this just as much! However, when I did get into this, it progressed pretty fast. The story itself is dense and the two different main characters (I guess they could both be called protagonists? protagonists-in-arms?) crash a bit like waves: they meet and retreat and then crash again. There’s court/ish intrigue, plotting left and ...

@sapphire I have finished reading She Who Became the Sun by Shelley Parker-Chan. This is a really great book with compelling characters and an interesting sort of fantastical alternate history. This is one of those where I found myself simultaneously rooting for and admonishing the key characters.

I will definitely be picking up the next book, He Who Drowned the World.

Annoying thing that bookshops do:
Get the sequel to a quite popular book that they have never stocked (or at least never displayed on their shelves).

I've been meaning to pick up #SheWhoBecameTheSun for a few years now, never seen it on shelves. But they all have #HeWhoDrownedTheWorld.
