It's #Kaijuktober! And to celebrate it I'm watching a #kaiju #movie every day.

Today's movie was: All Monsters Attack / ゴジラ・ミニラ・ガバラ オール怪獣大進撃 (1969)

A #film that subverts all tropes in the kaiju "genre", offering a whimsical adventure through the eyes of a bullied child. Ishirō Honda and Shinichi Sekizawa achieved what at that point was believed to be impossible: offer a fresh take.

I give it 3½/5 Kaiju

Today's movie was: Destroy All Monsters / 怪獣総進撃 (1968)

They decided to go all out with this #film, bringing not only every previous kaiju in a surprisingly coherent story, but going above and beyond with a #scifi plot that even involves space traveling. A solid entry in a mostly disappointing decade.

I give it 3½/5 Kaiju

Today's movie was: Invasion of Astro-Monster / 怪獣大戦争 (1965)

The first #film in the showa era that succeeds at combining #scifi with big monsters — no offense to The Mysterians (1957). I didn't expect this one to be anything more than a big crossover event, specially after the last entry, but it was great!

I give it 4/5 Kaiju

Today's movie was: Matango / マタンゴ (1963)

A pleasant surprise after the disappointing — and racist — King Kong vs. Godzilla (1962). #Toho abandons the giant monster formula and the result is a brilliant, intimate, classic #horror ensemble #film. It's already one of my all time favorite horror movies.

I give it 4½/5 Kaiju

It's #Kaijuktober! And to celebrate it I'm watching a #kaiju #movie every day.

Today's movie was: Mothra / モスラ (1961)

An outstanding return to form for the kaiju genre. #Toho started the 60s with a bang, redeeming themselves for Varan's (1958) fiasco! From story to visual effects, Mothra was their most ambitious #film to that point, even rivaling #Godzilla (1954) for the top spot.

I give it 4/5 Kaiju

Today's movie was: Godzilla / ゴジラ (1954)

I didn't expect this #film to be as well-written as it was. All I expected was "big mad dinosaur destroys Tokyo", I got that and so much more!

From military worship to the consequences of scientific progress, this movie has it all.

I give it 4/5 Kaiju

Another week, another batch of #movies that I get to watch. It was a complicated week; I watched two of the "greatest" #film of all time, and yet, they didn't do it for me. I'm sleeping on it before I start trashing them...

One #movie that I did enjoy was The Usual Suspects. It's a great #thriller. Even if part of the plot is not difficult to decipher.

Another week gone, another batch of movies I got to watch; only one truly great tho:

The Truman Show

Watching this #movie and discovering what was going on as Truman did so was a mind-blowing experience. I could not put into words what this movie is really about even if I tried. Is it about ethics in the arts? Is it about child abuse? Is it about power dynamics? Is it about the seemingly infinite power of American corporations? I don't fuckin' know.

Just had the random urge to re-watch 'War of the Worlds' (2005) just to see that there will be a 2025 'War of the Worlds' movie?
Gotta have a look at that one 👀

After Godzilla and Radon I expected a third kaiju to be more spectacular. What I got was Godzilla's little brother. He was not even good enough to terrorize Tokyo so they gave him a small village. The production value was a big step down too. Black and white in 1958, why? I give it 2/5 Kaiju 🦖🦖❌❌❌ #movies #cinema #cinemastodon #KFF #怪獣

Tomorrow I'll be watching King Kong vs. Godzilla / キングコング対ゴジラ (1962). I'm very excited I get to see #Godzilla again, and on top of that I get a giant ape? Yes, please! I hope it doesn't disappoint me; fingers crossed 🤞

Here's the schedule for the rest of the week:

I think Mothra is an allegory for the nuclear bomb. I know, I know, that's not an original thought, but hear me out:

There's a line in the movie that mirrors the mental gymnastics the United States went through to justify dropping the bomb on not one, but two cities inhabited entirely by civilians. I'll go more in depth in a content-warned (CW) toot.

That aside this movie have so many layers. I have been asking myself what is it really about (besides big angry monster destroys city).

Is it about the consequences of colonialism? Maybe it is about depredation? Here's an original one: nuclear warfare. The plausibility of all these themes makes the film fascinating.

Here's what I'm inclined to: the nuclear bomb.

The after effects of nuclear weapons is not central to the plot. The kidnapping of two women that invoke Mothra is, and what is their reasoning? I quote:

"Mothra will come take us home, but sadly, many innocent people will have to die for that to happen."

The exact "reasoning" of the US to drop the bomb. "Our boys deserve to come home, so let's commit a little genocide for shits and giggles."

But wait, there's more!

Mothra starts as a larvae and then becomes an adult. It causes destruction while in both forms but the adult form is more powerful. This mirrors the USA dropping two bombs on Japan, and how where those bombs called? Little Boy and Fat Man. Child and adult, one more powerful than the other, exactly like Mothra.

But wait, there is still more!

Six kaiju movies were released before Mothra, and in all of them humanity, somehow, triumphs against the monster. Not this time though! Mothra lives at the end. This is the first movie where humanity doesn't win against the kaiju, and what's more, they don't lose either. The kaiju has a mission, accomplishes, and leaves, leaving a trail of destruction behind it. All is left for humanity is resignation.

I didn't expect to see that much blackface/brownface in this movie tho. Crazy how blackface in Japan was introduced by American media. Food for thought.

As a half-black man I take the Whoopi Goldberg approach: forgive them for their ignorance.

Unintended racism aside, the pairing of Frankie Sakai and Kyōko Kagawa as reporters Zen and Michi was a nice surprise. Frankie brings a much needed comedic tone which was absent in the previous movies. Don't know why that insisted on telling more "serious" stories.

Also the small beauties were played by famous singers The Peanuts. That's pretty cool.

So, according to Wikipedia Mothra's final attack takes place in [REDACTED] because Toho had a contract with Columbia Pictures that stipulated it. That's why it felt shoehorned.

I could see the movie being a 9/10 if that scene didn't take place.

Mothra (film) - Wikipedia

@maxalmonte14 I noticed that a few Japanese films I watched from the late 60s / early 70s had blackface characters, or mixed-race characters, and thought it was strange as I'd never been exposed to that in Japanese cinema before, so I looked into it and read that US servicemen from the military bases that were established during the occupation after the end of WWII would father children with Japanese women, then they would return to the states and leave their children behind to be raised by single mothers

single mothers who suffered from extreme social stigma, and their children would be exposed to horrific racism growing up. in the late 60s they would be in their late teens

it was watching one of the "Stray Cat Rock" films starring Meiko Kaji that prompted me to look into it

@COMPU73E the transformation that American occupation brought to Japan's social, political, and cultural landscape is hard to measure today. I once watched a great video essay about blackface in Japanese media, will link it if I can find it again. I never paid attention to characters like Mr. Popo (Dragon Ball Z) or Jynx (Pokémon) being black because 90% of people around me were either black or mixed. It wasn't until years later that I read what blackface was.
