We did a bit of second-hand bookshopping yesterday afternoon in Canberra. This is my first time back in Canberra since the pandemic. You can never be sure what businesses survived the pandemic. It was good to see Canty's seems to be thriving.

I don't have a list of books I want any more since my successful trip to the Clunes Bootown festival earlier this year. I still have a sizeable pile of books to read, but I managed to get a nice pile of books from Canty's yesterday.

Do you think I can find a preowned/second hand printed version of the book "The Design and implementation of the 4.4BSD OS" somewhere other than the US? I want the cost for the book and delivery to be minimal. There are good offers on ebay but as they are from the US, delivery is not worth it. Are there options with origin from the EU? My destination is either Iran or UAE.

I'd never heard of a "proem" (a preface, preamble or preliminary comment) until today, when I came across one in PROUD DESTINY (1947) by German-Jewish novelist #LionFeuchtwanger, tr. by Moray Firth. It sold me on the novel. Another find from the wonderful City Basement Books in Melbourne.

Benjamin Disraeli said that he preferred TANCRED; or, THE NEW CRUSADE (1847), the third novel of the Young England trilogy, to all his other novels.

It focuses on Tancred, son of Lord & Lady Montacute, who "bewilders" his parents (a principle I live by) by abandoning London society & going to the Holy Land in search of a fulfilling faith and philosophy, and a solution to the antagonism between Christianity & Judaism.

Anyone else ever buy a book based on the title/cover alone?

This one will probably end up in my DNR pile. I bought it because the title struck a chord. And because I love the cover art.

Lots of other great titles & covers of L[eslie] P[urnell] Davies's books, but horror/SciFi/mysteries are not really my thing.

What about Patricia Nell Warren? Anyone still reading her? This is another recent find at City Basement Books in Melbourne.

Luckily no one tried to ban Patricia's books from our school library, where as a student in the 80s I discovered her most famous work THE FRONT RUNNER, a love story between an athlete & his coach & "the first positive portrayal of gay life to reach #1 on the New York Times bestseller list in 1974".

So thought I'd give this one a go.
