@claralistensprechen5th @ai6yr I don't think he took it to a shop to be resurfaced. TBF, he had bigger problems with the job.

He said "the book is wrong" about the head bolt torque specs. Book said "80 foot pounds", but that felt too loose, so he assumed a typo lost a zero and tightened it to 800 foot pounds.

800 foot pounds! I do math in my head. With a 2 foot wrench, that's 400 pounds, which I didn't think he was strong enough to do that. I say that doesn't sound right.

Next morning, one person in the group, "Bob", had a black eye!!!

Bob said after I left, the group quickly dwindled until it was just Bob & rude guy. Bob finished his drink & left. Rude guy followed him and tried to convince him to go to another bar. When Bob insisted on going home, rude guy punched him & ran away.

I offered to go to HR together to report rude guy, but Bob didn't want to. I didn't like it but respected his choice. We stopped associating with rude guy.

Everyone else was fine with me not drinking alcohol.

After I insisted on saying no, rude guy fetched next round of drinks. My "soda" was in short glass. Quick whiff confirmed it was soda with liquor. I declared what it was, said I wouldn't drink it, & offered it to anyone else at the table.

He became a total ass when I did that. He lied saying there's no alcohol in it. Kept trying to shove drink in my hand and insist I drink it. Called me a pussy. I excused myself and left.

True story time, from about 8 years ago.

After work, I joined few co-workers for happy hour. I had 1 or 2 alcoholic drinks, then cut myself off and drank soda rest of the night, for many reasons including I wanted to be 100% sober to drive home.

One guy was rude, insisted I keep drinking, said I was ruining the fun.

Kids, be your own person. Be stubborn. Don't let someone pressure you into doing something you don't want to do. No means no.

@ernie @mattl Meanwhile, I've taken on a European attitude about this stuff, which is basically the exact opposite. Some boobies on the screen for 4 seconds, who cares.

But a movie with graphic violence, I hope my kids never experience that, ever. Platoon is a great film, but not for an 8 year old.

ETA: the point of this story is the parent said if you don't let your kids see R rated movies, there's nothing else left. Which... ???

@ernie @mattl Story time, kids.

~20 years ago, I had conversation with family member. They were very mad about how adult scenes in an R rated movie went way too far & how that was totally inappropriate for an 8 year old to watch.

Which yeah, of course! But it's an R rated film. Like wtf did you expect?

Turns out they were OK with 8 yo watching films rated R for violence, like Platoon & Robocop. But if their kid saw boobies, well my heavens!
