Do you think of trust as something that is absolute? Do you either completely trust someone or completely distrust someone with no range of values in between?

Or do you think of trust as something that varies from low to high with values anywhere in between? Do you have some friends/family you trust more than others. with a very few at the highest level? Does your trust vary based on the situation?

Boosts appreciated, Thank You!

2024 was a rough year, and likely for many/most of us, 2025 will be worse.

Try to have hope as without hope, it's near impossible to strive for a better future. If you can't do that, then at least refrain from extinguishing the hope in others. Convincing people it's hopeless accomplishes nothing good.

As it is with airplane masks, take care of your own essential needs first, and then, if possible, help others.

HAPPY NEW YEAR, FRIENDS!

"What's the most common element in the human body?"

I saw this question, took a guess, then searched the web. Only thing is, the first answer I found answered the question by listing elements by weight.

To me, the word "common" implies frequency and not any other measure, such as weight or volume.

For example, if someone asked, "what is the most common eye color amongst this group of people?", would you expect you'd do anything other than counting?

@ernie @mattl Meanwhile, I've taken on a European attitude about this stuff, which is basically the exact opposite. Some boobies on the screen for 4 seconds, who cares.

But a movie with graphic violence, I hope my kids never experience that, ever. Platoon is a great film, but not for an 8 year old.

ETA: the point of this story is the parent said if you don't let your kids see R rated movies, there's nothing else left. Which... ???

@ernie @mattl Story time, kids.

~20 years ago, I had conversation with family member. They were very mad about how adult scenes in an R rated movie went way too far & how that was totally inappropriate for an 8 year old to watch.

Which yeah, of course! But it's an R rated film. Like wtf did you expect?

Turns out they were OK with 8 yo watching films rated R for violence, like Platoon & Robocop. But if their kid saw boobies, well my heavens!

I just learned about the โ€œgray rockโ€ method for dealing with toxic people. Whoa. I wished Iโ€™d known about this sooner.

The gist is that you can minimize harm by becoming uninteresting to the person who is trying to trigger some kind of response.

I was having a conversation today and an idea came up, something I first said to an ex-girlfriend nearly 20 years ago.

โ€œItโ€™s easy to make a promise knowing youโ€™ll never have to keep it.โ€

This could be interpreted a lot of ways. Letโ€™s say that some people make promises they know they either have no capability or intention of keeping, and thus the promise bears them no burden.

One of the most valuable things I learned in college was completely unrelated to the official curriculum. One prof said โ€œif you arenโ€™t failing sometimes, you arenโ€™t challenging yourself enough. If you always succeed, try something harder.โ€ ๐Ÿคฏ

This idea has both allowed me to try things I didnโ€™t think I could do (and succeed), and to not get stuck on my failures.
