In the cool, mossy grounds of Ōhara's Sanzen-in, hydrangeas bloom in profusion about the small shrine to Benzaiten (弁才天), 'goddess of knowledge, music, and all that flows'.
By mid-June most of the 1000 hydrangea bushes are in flower.
